SpaceX has come a long way since its inception; after testing so many rockets and failing, they finally learned what was needed, which allowed them to make a successful landing with the Starship rocket prototype. This task was not easy as the company burnt through a lot of time and money to succeed. SpaceX has become one of the most well-known rocket companies in the world, and they have certainly worked for it.

  • SpaceX made four attempts before the latest one; sadly, all of those rockets ran into some trouble as they were trying to land and ended up destroying themselves.
  • Luckily for SpaceX, the latest Starship prototype, the SN15, did not have the same difficulties; in fact, it could make a neat and clean descent back to the ground. There was a small fire at the base of the spacecraft, but it was extinguished.
  • The Starship concept has gained a lot of interest and traction over the years as NASA has decided to send more astronauts to the Moon later this decade. As far as SpaceX is concerned, this will only be one of the many uses of the new rockets.
  • If everything goes according to plan, the company hopes to replace the current Falcon rockets with the Starship spacecraft.
  • Currently, the Falcon rockets do a lot. They carry out both un-crewed and crewed missions for NASA and deploy satellites for the US military.
  • However, Elon Musk is confident that the Starship rockets can do everything better. It can even get people to Mars, and it does all this by being 50m tall.
  • The test for the SN15 began normally; it launched from the Boca Chica facility and started to rise thanks to three Raptor engines. The thrusters then turned off once the rocket reached a height of 10km. The rocket then prepares for the drop towards the ground.
  • The descent is controlled by large flaps that can be found on the rocket. This test is done to simulate future scenarios where the Starship rocket will re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere from orbit.
  • If everything goes well, the rocket should have its tail facing the ground before it reaches the surface. The rockets test before (SN8, SN9, SN10, SN11) could not do this, and that is why they were destroyed.
  • The SN15, on the other hand, was able to make this flip perfectly and, as a result, set itself on the ground as intended.
  • The company has many prototypes in development, and it is continuously making upgrades to make sure that the rockets fly properly. When Starships rockets become operational, they will launch using another rocket that is known as the Super Heavy.
  • The Super Heavy will feature around 28 Raptor engines and will produce over 70 meganewtons of thrust. To put that into perspective, that is double the thrust of the Apollo Saturn 5 that took people to the Moon.
