The latest data from England suggests that anyone infected with the delta variant of COVID will be twice as likely to need hospital care as someone who has the alpha variant. Experts say that the findings have made it even more important that people get fully vaccinated as it will reduce the chances of contracting the delta variant.
As of now, almost all the COVID cases in the UK are related to the delta variant. On Saturday alone, more than 32,000 new cases were recorded. The study was conducted by the Public Health England and the Medical Research Council. They looked at over 43,000 cases, and this was done when both the Alpha and Delta variants were prevalent in the UK. A lot of the patients were people who had not been vaccinated as of yet. After studying the data, it was concluded that out of all the patients, those who had contracted the delta variant of the disease were twice likely to get admitted to a hospital.
This number is still pretty high, and it will put a lot of strain on the hospitals which are already working very hard. This is why experts are stressing that people need to get fully vaccinated as it will reduce their chances of getting infected. Not only that, if you get infected even after vaccinations, the effects of the virus are likely to be less dangerous. According to some other researches, protection against symptomatic infection may wane over time, but the vaccines still offer better protection against hospitalizations and death caused by Delta.
In the UK, around 88% of the population under the age of 16 have received their first dose of the vaccine, while about 78% of the people over the age of 16 have received their second dose. It is good to see that more and more people are getting vaccinated and helping to fight the virus. However, it is still important to understand that people still need to take care and stay indoors for as long as possible. They need to wear their masks when traveling and keep a safe distance from others to protect themselves and others.
